Who’s ready to come out of hibernation and shine?
This past year has been one of self-reflection and healing. That is because 2018 was the year of retrogrades. When planets go retrograde, there is a shift from our external environment to our internal environment. The energy is more introspective and the purpose is for us to look within and process our inner world. This energy is much needed in our society as we are often stimulated and focused on our daily life (work/family/etc.) that we overlook or disregard our internal needs (self-care/emotional processing/healing/etc.).
In 2018, every single planet took a turn inward with a retrograde. There was only one month, February, that saw clear and forward direction of the planets. In contrast, there were two months, July and August in which we experienced SIX planets in retrograde at one time! We had both personal and interpersonal planets taking a turn (Read more on the planets here) which created a call to review our own personality/individuality (inner planets) and how we show up in the world as we follow our path (outer planets).
I find it helpful to think back and reflect on what you experienced during times of retrogrades as they are great teachers. What energies did you feel or experiences did you have that brought about struggle, release, enlightenment, healing, etc.
This is a perfect exercise to do right before we have our last new moon of 2018!
Here is an outline of the 2018 retrograde schedule for you to reflect upon and review what happened for you during these times:
Mercury (inner planet of the mind and communication): 3/22-4/15, 7/26-8/19, and 11/16-12/6
Venus (inner planet of values and connection to people and things): 10/5-10/16
Mars (inner planet of action, will and desire): 6/26-8/27
Jupiter (inner planet of expansion, prosperity, and exploration): 3/8 - 7/10
Saturn (inner planet of structure and karmic boundaries): 4/17- 9/6
Uranus (outer planet of intuitive awakening beyond societal structure): 8/07-1/6/2019
Neptune (outer planet of dissolution of ego and soul growth): 6/18 - 11/24
Pluto (outer planet of death, rebirth, and transformation...your soul purpose): 4/22 - 9/30
Chiron (asteroid called the wounded healer which represents the ways through which we heal ourselves and others): 7/4- 12/9
As you can see, there is not one aspect of self that was left untouched by the retrograde schedule this year. Many of you are most likely feeling completely raw and exposed right now. Like everything that you wish to keep hidden has come to the surface to be worked through. Many of you are just tired! Tired of struggle, tired of healing, tired of the anxiety and pressure to “get better”.
For those of you who do not feel this way, you most likely were born with many of these planets in retrograde and thus are more comfortable with your inner world. You may be feeling like you finally got the chance to truly shine a light on your path and learned how to express your more introspective nature out into the world.
So as we close 2018, take a deep breath and an even bigger exhale...because 2019 is approaching and the energy is one of external expansion! I will be posting soon on the 2019 year ahead with a general overview of the planetary movements and aspects.

The New Moon in Sagittarius on 12/7 at 12:20am MST brings our goals and aspirations to the surface and aims us towards spiritual expansion. This New Moon is heavily influenced by Jupiter as it aligns with the Sun and Moon in Sagittarius. This is what is urging us to expand our perspective on what could be. The energy might feel as if you have a deep desire to explore new goals and intentions for the upcoming year. This is the last New Moon of 2018 and with it comes the need to honor how far you have come and open up to what lies ahead.
This New Moon is guided by Mars and Neptune both aligned in the sign of Pisces. The energy of Mars and Neptune become one and fiery energy (Mars) is given to the deep waters of our soul (Neptune). Your intuition is heightened as well as your desire to explore the spiritual world. The word spiritual means something different to everybody, but it is an energy that goes beyond our physical/material world. It is our connection to something greater than ourselves. It is releasing our need to control our life and trusting that we are all cared for and supported, no matter what we experience.
It is easy to lose sight of this during the stress of the holidays or during our everyday life in general, especially in times of struggle. But that is the most important time to remember that you are loved and supported. The veil is thinning during this New Moon and your intuition is asking you to WAKE UP TO YOUR POTENTIAL!
This very esoteric energy is given a grounding force from Saturn as it forms a harmonious aspect to Mars and Neptune. Saturn is helping guide you on the right path and allowing for you to remain grounded and organized in your pursuits. Saturn has a bad reputation in astrology but that is mainly because he is the teacher and authority figure making sure you don’t take a wrong step, which may go against what your ego wants. When that happens, we meet struggle. BUT if you open up to Saturn’s guidance, it can truly be a wonderful experience.
Overall, this New Moon is going to be a juicy one! One that is calling for you to get in touch with your soul and trust your intuitive guidance. To create intentions for your growth and expansion, both on the physical and spiritual level.
Here is a New Moon Ritual that I like to use!
With love and light,
To be created and practiced on the new moon.
Candle/matches, 6 items from nature (flowers, stones, crystals, etc), a piece of paper/pen, Sage stick/Palo Santo/dried herbs of your choice. Any personal altar items that align with your intention. Access to fireplace or outdoor fire- optional.
FIND A QUIET PLACE
Find a quiet place inside or in nature where you can be comfortable. Begin to calm your body with deep breaths and bring awareness to your intention for your ritual. (Eg. Peace, love, balance, letting go.)
BUILD AN ALTAR
Begin to build your altar, place your candle in the center and place your nature items in the 4 cardinal directions, one below for Mother Earth and above for sun/stars/moon, place anything else of significance your altar.
Smudge yourself with sage or palo santo for purifying your whole self by fanning the smoke over the front and back body and over your altar.
CALL IN THE DIRECTIONS
Call in sacred space and honor the directions:
South- for letting go and being in the flow of your life
West- for facing fear with love
North- for living in joy and in connection to our ancestors
East- for leading and living from our hearts
Mother Earth- or grounding, creation and abundance
Father Sky, Grandmother Moon and the Stars- for our appreciation to the spirit world
Sit in meditation honoring your whole, connected and vibrant self. Repeat out loud 3 times “ I am whole, I am connected, I am love.” Bring awareness to what you are ready to invite into your life. Take time to imagine or see yourself living this invitation.
WRITE AN INVITATION
Write on the a piece paper what you are now inviting into your life. Using I am and I statements are powerful. I often like to use the statement "I Intend to...". Speak you invitations out loud and then blow 3 long slow breaths and place them on your altar.
Sit once again in silence and observe how you feel, any sensation or images that come to you know. Stay soft, open and receptive. With great attention take your rolled up paper and honor the work you have done today to welcome in the new. If you have access to a fire you can burn your paper, if not, feel free to release it in any way that feels right.
CLOSE THE SACRED SPACE
Close up your sacred space by honoring the 4 directions, Mother Earth and the stars, sun and moon. It may feel right to honor your ancestors, spirit guides, family and teachers; consider speaking your thanks aloud. Thank yourself for being the open luminous vessel of light and love that you are. Journal about your ritual if you are inspired or share your experience with a friend or loved one.
With light and love,
This ritual was adapted from Gaia
